Anti Social Media
The main reason I don't like social media. What do you think? Do you agree with me or not?
I noticed a few years ago that on Facebook I was doing complicated calculations like:
Do I actually like this post? Yes/No
Do I want the person to know I like their post? Yes/No
Do I want other people to know I like this person's post? Yes/No
Do I want to see more from this person?
Do I want Facebook to know that I like this?
etc. so what looks like a simple gesture actually involves complex calculations.
The thing that really drives me nuts, as you saw in this rant of a video is thinking about the reasons people post to social media. Of course we're drawn to the dopamine spikes we get when our posts get li...

How to Film in the Ultraviolet
Просмотров 143 тыс.5 лет назад
Filming in UV requires removing a filter, getting UV-transparent lenses and getting a good filter to block all other light. I got my hot mirror removed here: ve42.co/UVcam That is an affiliate link so by ordering through the link, LifePixel will give a commission back to me. If you don't want that, just use a different link. I've always been fascinated to film in the UV because it reveals to us...

The Climbing Magnets Mystery (ft. Steve Mould)

When spun on a screwdriver, magnets climb up its length, but why? This video brought to you by my friend Steve Mould: ve42.co/SteveMould This all started with a question on twitter, when someone wanted to know why a chain of neodymium magnets climbs up a screwdriver when the screwdriver is rotated. A search for the explanation ensued, culminating in the stick-slip conclusion presented in this v...

Why YouTube Used to Prefer Quality
Просмотров 782 тыс.6 лет назад
Almost four years ago I made a video about quality vs quantity on RUclips. Reflecting on how the platform is working in 2017 I find that quantity (frequency) has become significantly more important and quality less so. I'm not saying this is my recommendation for how people should make channels, just that this is what seems to be an effective strategy nowadays. This video involves two distinct ...

“If you have a magnetic field and then you stretch a magnetic field then you get a magnetic field” You have explained nothing man- you were supposed to tell us how we get the magnetic field in the first place. I already know the answer so I know where to fill in the gaps you left but that was terrible.

'Spin' is like the manner in which a thing will orientate itself without any external influence acting upon it other than the field/medium from which it is manifest from. Think of the geometries of the platonic solids... Now if you were to have one of these solids in the form of a hollow plastic object and you were to throw it in a bucket of water, if it were a triangular prism it would want to float (orientate) itself with a point facing downwards. This is its preferred natural orientation. When it is a component of a larger thing its orientation may be forced to be different to that of its natural orientation, this 'spin' is a representation of the 'resistance' to the forced orientation it is held in and the tendancy of it to revert back to natural orientation if the influence upon it is removed.

Some nay we've been extremely lucky to avoid an atomic war and there were so many "close calls" but I think it's not the case, since we couldn't ask ourselves the question if such escalation came. If we look at it as an experiment repeated multiple times, we will find out that there would be few people or none at all surviving a global atomic war. Therefore they should consider themselves "lucky". In few scenarios with a happy ending there are far more alive people than in overall sum of scenarios with almost everyone dying.
